Adam Gibbon and Christopher Collier-Reed, will be representing Pinelands High School and South Africa at the Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition (BYSCC) from 26 to 30 March 2025.
We are very proud to announce that two of our Grade 12 students, Adam Gibbon and Christopher Collier-Reed, will be representing Pinelands High School and South Africa at the Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition (BYSCC) from 26 to 30 March 2025. Their selection comes after winning Gold medals at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) for their research project in Agricultural Sciences.
Innovating for a Sustainable Future
Adam and Christopher’s project, Flies to the Rescue: Innovating Food Waste Management Using Black Soldier Fly Larvae, addresses the global issue of food waste by using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae to efficiently decompose organic waste while producing valuable by-products. Their research demonstrates a scalable and eco-friendly solution that can be applied in both small-scale urban settings and large-scale industrial waste management operations. By aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, their work has the potential to drive economic growth while making a significant environmental impact.
Their participation in this internationally renowned competition, hosted by the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, will provide them with the opportunity to present their research alongside some of the brightest young minds in science and technology.
At Pinelands High School, we are exceptionally proud of Adam and Christopher’s dedication and passion for science. Their success serves as an inspiration to their peers, reinforcing the importance of STEM education and encouraging younger students to pursue scientific excellence.
We wish them the very best as they take this incredible step onto the world stage—South Africa stands behind you, and Pinelands High School is cheering you on!
