Pinelands High School students achieved excellent results at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Cape Town Regional Science Fair, held at the University of Cape Town from 11 to 13 August.
The school entered 24 students with 15 projects, which collectively earned four Gold medals, four Silver medals, five Bronze medals and two Special Awards.
Lexi de Roo (Grade 9), Uthmaan Razak (Grade 11) and Huda Nacerodien (Grade 11) were awarded Gold medals and selected to advance to the International Science Fair in Johannesburg, where they will compete alongside leading young scientists from South Africa and beyond.
Huda and Uthmaan’s project explored the accessible, low-tech extraction of fuel from used car tyres.
Lexi also received Best in Category and the SAEON (South African Environmental Observation Network) Special Award for her project investigating the impact of plant biodiversity and ecosystem type on arthropod biodiversity in a suburban area of Cape Town.
Science and innovation have long formed an important part of academic extension at Pinelands High School. For more than 20 years, the school has run its own internal Science and Innovation Fair, giving Grade 11 science students the opportunity to undertake independent research, develop their scientific thinking and apply the scientific method to real-world questions and problems.
The school congratulates all the students who participated and thanks the Science Department for the many hours of guidance and support provided throughout the process.
Congratulations also go to Ms Masureik and Mr Davies, who were both recognised at the regional fair with long-service awards for their contribution to the Eskom Expo.
We wish Lexi, Uthmaan and Huda every success as they prepare to represent Pinelands High School at the International Science Fair in Johannesburg.
