PHS Pair Win GOLD Award at UCT Mathematics Competition

Posted by on in News

On Thursday 7 April, 75 students from PHS took part in the annual UCT Mathematics Competition. We entered five individuals and five pairs in each grade category. The UCT Mathematics Competition is one of the biggest inter-school maths competitions in the country, with over 7 000 participating students.

With numbers so vast, it is a mark of excellence to be ranked among the top achievers - and this is just what two of our Grade 10s have done! Rafeeq Jaffer and Muhammed Zuhayr Khan participated in the pairs section of the competition, and we have recently learned that they have received a Gold Award for placing in the top three pairs in their grade. This fantastic result is testament to their ability to think creatively about unfamiliar problems, and their strong teamwork.

Rafeeq and Zuhayr's performance qualified them for the invitational UCT Mathematics Challenge, which was held on Saturday 7 May. Their exact rank position will be announced at an awards ceremony on Thursday 19 May.

Congratulations to our exceptionally talented Sydney Jacobs who has just returned from representing South Africa in Water Polo at the U17 European Union Nations Cup in Denmark.

Sydney attended the National Training Camp at St Stithians at the end of March after which the 13-strong team travelled to Odense in Denmark to compete in the U17 European Union Nations Cup from 1 – 3 April 2016.

Eight countries competed and South Africa dominated from start to finish. The two semi-finals featured SA v England and Malta v Czech Republic. The SA team won gold in the finals by beating Czech Rep 15-3.

Sydney played mid or wing and scored three goals in the Cup. Well done, Sydney! You did us and South Africa proud.

Congratulations to Uthmaan Abrahams and Matthew Kaiser who have just returned from representing South Africa at the International U15 Cricket Challenge in Malaysia.

This was the fourth year that an invitation team from South Africa participated in the annual Tuanku Ja’Affar Trophy Tournament. The South African team showed lots of promise from the start of the tournament by beating India, Thailand, Bangladesh and Malaysia in the round-robin phase of the competition. They unfortunately lost to Sri Lanka in the final and ended as runners-up in the International U15 Cricket Challenge.

Uthmaan was South Africa’s leading wicket-taker at the tournament and Matthew made valuable contributions as a middle order batsmen with a healthy average of 23.7.

Well done to the boys on their great achievements! We are very proud of them.

Pinelands High School Students Lend a Hand

Posted by on in News

Due to the ongoing drought in parts of South Africa the Representative Council of Learners initiated a water project among the students. The idea was to lend a helping hand to the wider community and for students to think about others in need.

The school partnered with Operation Hydrate and thousands of litres of water were collected by students and then dropped off at the collection point in Maitland.
