The Reeler Centre
Research has shown that school libraries have a positive impact on pupil achievement, and so in 2010 the school embarked on a complete overhaul of its existing library. The result, our new Reeler Centre, is far more than a traditional library. We have created an inviting space where pupils can engage with each other in a safe environment that promotes learning through interaction. The goal of the Reeler Centre is to ensure that all members of the school community have access to books and reading, to information, and to information technology. These facilities are not only for the education, enjoyment and entertainment of all members of the school community, but also enhance and expand the school's curriculum.
As our primary aim is to develop and build on a love for reading, we are acquiring a popular fiction section based on international top teen fiction. The Pinelands school community is encouraged to donate books and magazines to relieve the library budget, and develop the joy of sharing. As a result, we have a very good selection of current magazines. We also aim to develop a resource base for the school by using the curriculum and pupils' interests to guide us in developing the library's collection, in order to promote independent reading and lifelong learning. Materials in the library can be located using an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). Pupils have access to computers and the internet in the Reeler Centre. Both colour and black-and-white printers and copiers are available, as is a binding machine.
A flexible schedule allows teachers to schedule library time when library orientation, library skills or information materials are needed as part of the classroom learning experience. A computerised reading programme focusing on improving the reading skills of the junior classes was recently implemented. The Reeler Centre also serves as a place for pupils to do independent work and research, use the computer facilities and host special events such as book fairs and book clubs.
A second phase incorporating a library courtyard and coffee shop, aptly called "Page Break", has recently opened. This will give the Pinelands community the opportunity to use the Reeler Centre to host events and functions, or simply to visit the school for a good cup of coffee! The coffee shop will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 07:30 until 11:30. As the demand for the coffee shop grows, these times may be revised.
The Reeler Centre is open from 07:00 - 16:00 (Monday to Thursday and from 07:00 - 14:00 (Friday).
