Life Sciences Learning 'on the go'

Posted by on in News

Last week Monday was the Grade 10's turn to go exploring the environment on a field trip to Granger Bay and Greenpoint Biodiversity Garden.

They have been learning about biomes and ecosystems and this trip served as their case study ecosystem (rocky shore) and biome (fynbos). First hand experience on the shore at Granger Bay and in the fynbos in Greenpoint Park helped to make the knowledge learnt in class more relevant and interesting.

Following the three focus stations on the rocky shore, the students had a lunch break in the Greenpoint Park. They then contined their work by exploring the fynbos in the biodiversity garden.

The view from the bottom of the shore. The weather was perfect and there was hardly any swell this year!

One of the prac stations involved quadrant sampling of small and large limpets along a transect rope every few meters through the different intertital zones.

A baby winkle was one of the many creatures counted in the rockpools. One of the prac stations involved a rapid biodiversity assessment comparing biodiversity of low, mid and high rockpools on the shore.

Students were also required to document the diversity of life found with photographs for a poster presentation. The collaborative poster presentations were submitted electronically via Google Classroom to their teachers for marking and feedback without need for printing. The best posters will be printed and displayed in classrooms once they have been assessed.

One of the teachers remarked that they had seen pretty much every creature they wanted to find, except a crab... Well after a quick search this little guy ticked yet another box. — in Mouille Point, Western Cape, South Africa.

After a well deserved lunch under the trees at Greenpoint Park, the fynbos prac station was tackled. Using the many signboards certainly helped to answer some of the questions posed. — in Mouille Point, Western Cape, South Africa.

The best time to go study the rocky shore is a spring low tide when the water level is at its lowest (this occurs roughly twice a month). In addition, it can be a challenge to match the field trip date with a suitable spring low tide that occurs in the early to mid morning. We were lucky this year! — in Mouille Point,
